Acle: St Edmund King and Martyr, Acle
Located in the centre of this ancient market village, this lovely old church is now about 1100 years old. Its round tower (thought to be Saxon and to date from between 850 and 950 AD)was modified in the 13th century and again in 1472 (when battlements were added at a cost - then - of £16). The tower houses six bells, dating back to 1623. Built mainly of flint with brick and rubble, the church has a beautiful thatched and slate roof. Internally, it is kept is superb condition and has a stone font (dated 1410), ornate 15th century rood screen and many other interesting features not least of which is a 15th century inscription, written directly onto the wall plaster which relates to one of the plagues that periodically swept the country in those days. Discovered in 1912, this was professionally restored and stabilised in 1983.
